After years of crossing paths in the country music world, Luke Bryan says working alongside Carrie Underwood on American Idol has revealed a side of the superstar he never fully appreciated before. Underwood joined the American Idol judges’ panel in Season 23 and is set to return for Season 24 alongside Bryan and fellow judge Lionel Richie. As the trio prepares for another season, Bryan recently shared an unexpected observation about his longtime peer.
“The most on-time person you’ve ever met”
Appearing on The Highway on SiriusXM, Bryan revealed that Underwood’s punctuality has left a strong impression.
“She is the most on-time person you have ever met,” Bryan said. “I’m talking about punctual, dialed in, professional. I mean, like one minute before—it’s like Bill Belichick taught her how to show up on time.”
Bryan explained that while he’s often still getting ready in his dressing room, Underwood is already seated at the judges’ table. According to him, she’s frequently visible on the monitor, calmly settled and ready to go before anyone else.
“It’s like 9:03, and there’s Carrie,” he joked. “Ready. Looking at her nails.”
A new level of respect behind the scenes
Bryan’s comments highlight the professionalism Underwood brings to the judging panel, something that has become more noticeable now that they spend extended time together on set. While both artists have enjoyed decades-long careers, American Idol has given them a new environment to connect beyond touring and award shows. This marks the second season Bryan and Underwood have worked closely together, and he says the experience has allowed them to bond over more than music.
Bonding over family life
Beyond the judging desk, Bryan says he’s enjoyed learning about Underwood’s life offstage—particularly her role as a parent. Both artists are parents to two sons, which has led to relatable conversations during downtime on set.
“Just getting to know her and her family dynamic… having two boys, it’s really fun to hear the stories going on around their household,” Bryan shared.
The shared experiences have helped strengthen their connection and added a personal layer to their professional relationship.
Praise for fellow Idol mainstays
Bryan also had kind words for his longtime co-judge Lionel Richie, describing him as warm, generous, and famously fond of fast food—especially Burger King.
“He’s just the best human being on the planet,” Bryan said.
He also praised American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, noting the preparation and precision required to guide live television.
“Ryan has to study the scripts, the blocking, the cameras,” Bryan explained. “There’s a reason he’s in that role—he knows how to make it happen from day one.”
