Matthew Lillard is revisiting his breakout role in Wes Craven’s Scream with a mix of humor and humility. The actor, who played the unhinged Stu Macher in the 1996 horror classic, admitted during a recent podcast appearance that he may have gone overboard in his performance.
Lillard’s Honest Take
Speaking on On Film…With Kevin McCarthy, Lillard confessed that his younger self was “trying hard in every scene” and “chewing the scenery.” While fans have long celebrated his manic energy in the film, the actor said he now sees moments where he was “doing too much.”
Improvised Lines and Iconic Scenes
Lillard revealed that several of his most memorable lines were improvised, adding to the chaotic charm of his character. Still, he doubled down on his critique, pointing to the infamous blood-drooling finale as an example of him being “an idiot boy” caught up in the moment.
Praise for the Ensemble
Despite his self-deprecation, Lillard praised Craven’s casting choices and the ensemble’s performances. He highlighted Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Skeet Ulrich, and Jamie Kennedy as perfectly balanced pieces of what he called a “Jenga tower of performances” that captured the cultural zeitgeist.
Looking Ahead to Scream 7
Fans won’t have to wait long to see Lillard back in action. He is set to reprise his role as Stu Macher in Scream 7, which hits theaters on February 27. The upcoming installment will see Ghostface return to terrorize Sidney Prescott’s new life, with her daughter becoming the next target. The film reunites franchise veterans Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, alongside Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Joel McHale. With Lillard back in the mix, anticipation is high for how his character will re-enter the story nearly three decades later.
