Actor Meg Ryan has shared a heartfelt tribute to director Rob Reiner following the filmmaker’s shocking death in Los Angeles. Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found fatally stabbed inside their home on Sunday. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and charged in connection with the killings.
Ryan, who worked closely with Reiner on the classic 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, broke her silence Wednesday through an Instagram post expressing grief and admiration for the couple.
“Oh how we will miss this man”
In her post, Ryan remembered Reiner for his belief in love, laughter and optimism.
“Oh how we will miss this man,” she wrote. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle, for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter.”
Ryan praised their generosity and imagination, calling them champions of the best in people.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy,” she continued. “That some good may come, some awareness raised.”
Ryan shared a photo of herself dancing with Reiner on the set of When Harry Met Sally, adding visual nostalgia to the tribute.
Partnership That Defined a Genre
Reiner directed When Harry Met Sally, which starred Ryan and Billy Crystal and became one of the most defining romantic comedies of all time. Reiner worked closely with Ryan throughout filming and helped craft the film’s enduring tone and pacing.
Reiner also appeared onscreen in another Ryan classic, Sleepless in Seattle. His ability to shape stories blending wit, tenderness and emotional vulnerability made him one of the most influential romantic-comedy directors of his era.
Hollywood Mourns Loss of a Legendary Filmmaker
Tributes from actors, filmmakers and fans continue to emerge across social media. Many credited Reiner with shaping the romantic comedy landscape while also producing work across drama, satire and social commentary.
Reiner’s influence extends beyond film. He was recognized for decades of activism in civic causes and was outspoken on issues of democracy, media integrity and public health. His career included directing Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men and other films that became cultural touchstones.
A Family Tragedy Raises Questions
Authorities confirmed that Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He appeared in court earlier this week wearing a suicide-prevention gown and remains in custody pending arraignment scheduled for early January.
The family’s surviving children, Jake and Romy, issued a statement describing the loss as “unimaginable.” They asked for space as they grieve the deaths of their parents, whom they described as not only caregivers but best friends.
A Legacy Built on Love and Storytelling
Ryan’s tribute reflects how Reiner’s work fostered lasting emotional connections with audiences and collaborators.
“Thank you for your faith in the best in people,” she wrote. “They loved. They were loved.”
Although the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain devastating, Ryan emphasized the values and creativity that defined the couple’s lives. She expressed hope that the tragedy might inspire compassion, awareness and deeper understanding.
As the film industry continues to mourn the loss, Reiner’s contributions to cinema, his partnerships and the relationships he nurtured endure through generations of storytelling.
