Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expanding their Hollywood portfolio with a new scripted feature. The couple have signed on as producers for Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy The Wedding Date, based on the bestselling novel by Jasmine Guillory. The project was reported in December 2025, marking one of the Sussexes’ first major scripted films under Archewell Productions. While they have previously produced documentaries and unscripted content for Netflix, including their 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, The Wedding Date signals a deeper move into mainstream feature filmmaking.
A Modern Rom-Com With Bestseller Roots
The Wedding Date is adapted from Guillory’s debut novel, first published in 2018 and later becoming the launchpad for her popular six-book Wedding Date series. The story centers on a chance elevator encounter that leads to a fake date arrangement for a wedding—an idea that quickly turns into something more complicated and romantic. Though Netflix has not yet released an official film logline, the book follows Alexa Monroe, who agrees to attend a wedding with Drew Nichols, a man she meets unexpectedly. What begins as a convenience-driven pact gradually develops into a genuine emotional connection.
Who’s Writing the Film
Acclaimed screenwriter Tracy Oliver is adapting the novel for the screen. Oliver made history with Girls Trip in 2017, becoming the first Black woman to write a film that grossed more than $100 million worldwide. Her credits also include Little, The Sun Is Also a Star, The Blackening, and the TV series Harlem and First Wives Club. Oliver confirmed her involvement on social media, praising Guillory’s novel and thanking Archewell Productions and Netflix for backing the project. Guillory has also publicly expressed excitement about the adaptation, saying she was thrilled to collaborate with Oliver, Netflix, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan and Harry’s Role
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will serve strictly as producers on The Wedding Date. There are no plans for Markle to appear on screen in the film. The former actress, best known for her role on Suits, briefly returned to acting in 2025 with a cameo appearance as herself in the Amazon MGM Studios film Close Personal Friends. The movie follows the Sussexes’ decision to extend their partnership with Netflix into a multi-year, first-look deal covering both film and television. The revised agreement reflects Netflix’s evolving strategy away from large multi-project contracts toward more selective collaborations.
Release Timeline and Where to Watch
A release date for The Wedding Date has not yet been announced, and casting details remain under wraps. The film will stream exclusively on Netflix once completed. As development continues, the project stands out as a notable step for Meghan and Harry—pairing their production ambitions with a proven romantic property and an experienced creative team.
