Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm says one of Motown’s biggest legends helped shape the Spice Girls’ sound and spirit — and she’s honoring that inspiration on her latest single. During an interview at the Z100 Jingle Ball in New York City on Dec. 12, the singer revealed that Diana Ross was one of the “incredible women” who influenced the group in the early 1990s. Mel C’s new song, “Sweat,” includes a sample of Ross’ 1981 hit “Work That Body,” creating a full-circle moment for the pop star.
Diana Ross as a Musical Influence
Mel C reflected on seeing Ross perform live early in the Spice Girls’ career. The experience resonated deeply, she said, because Ross embodied confidence, glamour and vocal power — qualities that inspired the group’s signature message of female empowerment.
“We had so many influences, and there’d been so many incredible women before us,” Mel C explained. “Diana was one of those women. We were lucky enough to watch her perform in London very early in our career.”
Mel C added that many members of the group grew up listening to Motown, often through their parents. She credits that musical foundation with shaping her artistic identity.
“My mom was a huge fan,” she said. “Everything that’s been in your life is what inspires you. It’s wonderful now to have her fantastic sample in my new song.”
Revisiting Spice Girls Legacy
Mel C’s tribute comes as fans continue to speculate about a reunion. The Spice Girls — Mel C, Geri Halliwell Horner, Emma Bunton, Mel B, and Victoria Beckham — last toured together in 2019 without Beckham. The group’s last public performance as a full unit was during the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony, aside from an impromptu reunion at Beckham’s 50th birthday party in 2024. In October 2025, Beckham told Andy Cohen she occasionally considers returning for a performance — but a world tour conflicts with her fashion and beauty commitments.
“Being on stage is fun, but it’s not ultimately what I want to do anymore,” Beckham shared. Still, she admitted a Spice Girls show at the Sphere in Las Vegas would be “amazing.”
Mel C’s New Chapter
More than 30 years after the Spice Girls’ formation, Mel C continues to explore new creative paths while honoring her roots. Sampling Ross’ work signals a connection between past influences and future musical experimentation. For fans of both Motown and ’90s pop history, “Sweat” offers a nostalgic tribute wrapped in modern production. As speculation continues about potential reunions and one-off shows, Mel C’s newest release reminds listeners of the legacy of girl power — and the legends who inspired it.
