Mina Starsiak Hawk is sharing a new update about her relationship with her mother, Karen E. Laine, more than two years after their fallout became public. The HGTV star, best known for co-hosting Good Bones with Laine, said the two are now in a “good” place—though she made it clear that rebuilding trust and connection is still a process. Starsiak Hawk spoke about their relationship during an interview with PEOPLE ahead of her return to HGTV in the upcoming season of Rock the Block.
The mother-daughter duo worked together on Good Bones for eight seasons, but tension behind the scenes became visible around the time the long-running series ended in 2023. Reflecting on their relationship, Starsiak Hawk said healing doesn’t happen overnight.
“It took us a lot of time to get there,” she said of the strain that built up between them. “So I think it takes a lot of time to kind of get out of it as well.”
Her comments suggest that while the biggest conflicts may be behind them, the emotional aftermath is still something the family is working through.
Starsiak Hawk revealed that her family spent the holidays together, calling the current situation “amicable.”
“We were all together for the holidays, so we’re all amicable,” she shared.
However, she also described the relationship honestly, noting that things aren’t exactly back to what they once were.
“We’re not like best friends that braid each other’s hair on Saturday nights or anything,” she said. “But no, it’s good.”
Starsiak Hawk first spoke about conflict with her family in August 2023 on her podcast Mina AF. At the time, she said she wasn’t in a great place with either her mother or her brother, Tad. A month later, she told PEOPLE that filming Good Bones Season 8 came with major challenges, especially because her relationship with Laine was under stress during production. She recalled a particularly intense moment early in the season.
During the premiere, Starsiak Hawk said she and her mother had a “knockdown drag-out” fight during demolition. Despite the tension, she noted that viewers likely wouldn’t detect the behind-the-scenes conflict because the show’s focus stayed on home renovation, not personal drama.
Starsiak Hawk launched her Indianapolis-based renovation company, Two Chicks and a Hammer, with Laine in 2007. Although Laine stepped back from the business in 2019, she continued appearing on Good Bones alongside her daughter for several more years. After the main series ended in October 2023, the pair returned in a limited spinoff in August 2024, showing them taking on separate projects in different states. The spinoff followed Starsiak Hawk renovating an Indiana lake house for her family, while Laine tackled a fixer-upper in Wilmington, North Carolina, to create a beach home.
Now, Starsiak Hawk is heading into a new HGTV chapter as a competitor on Rock the Block Season 7. She will team up with former NFL player turned actor Vernon Davis. The new season also includes unique pairings of HGTV stars with celebrities who share an interest in design. Rock the Block Season 7 is expected to premiere in early 2026.
