Nancy Cartwright, the longtime voice of Bart Simpson, has shared one of the most surprising moments of her career — being recognized for her voice while traveling abroad.
A Safari Surprise
Speaking to PEOPLE at The Simpsons 800th episode celebration in Hollywood, Cartwright revealed that a child recognized her iconic voice during a train ride in South Africa. “We were on safari and it got recognized by this kid, a 12-year-old or something,” she said. “Oh, I can’t get away from it. Oh, they’re coming in mobs.”
Bart Simpson Legacy
Cartwright, now 68, has voiced Bart since the show’s inception. She originally auditioned for Lisa but quickly realized Bart was the role she wanted. Described as a “10-year-old underachiever, school-hating and proud of it,” Bart became one of television’s most enduring characters. The Simpsons began as animated shorts on The Tracy Ullman Show before debuting in 1990 as part of Fox’s Sunday lineup. Over 35 years later, Cartwright’s voice remains instantly recognizable worldwide.
Family Connection
Cartwright also revealed in 2024 that she is the aunt of pop star Sabrina Carpenter. “Maybe you’ve known me for a little while, doing this little 10-year-old boy for 35 some years — and find out that I’m related to this superstar,” she said in a TikTok video.
A Career That Resonates Globally
Cartwright’s story highlights the global reach of The Simpsons. From Hollywood premieres to safari trains in South Africa, Bart Simpson’s voice continues to connect generations of fans.
