LOS ANGELES — Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in the cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
His family confirmed the news in a statement on social media, saying Brendon “passed in his sleep of natural causes.” They described him as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” noting that his art and painting in recent years reflected his true spirit.
A Defining Role in Buffy
Brendon starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003, appearing in all seven seasons as the loyal best friend of Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. His performance earned him three Saturn Award nominations, including two for Best Actor in Television.
The actor’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan Schultz, occasionally served as his body double during the series. Co-star Alyson Hannigan shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Career Beyond Buffy
Following his breakout role, Brendon appeared in Criminal Minds, Private Practice, and Kitchen Confidential. His film credits included Psycho Beach Party, Big Gay Love, and Redwood.
Brendon also became a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America, openly discussing his lifelong stutter and advocating for awareness.
Health Struggles and Resilience
The actor faced significant health challenges, including a heart attack and spinal surgeries for cauda equina syndrome, a rare condition affecting movement and bodily functions. He also spoke candidly about his struggles with substance addiction and mental health.
Despite these difficulties, his family emphasized that Brendon remained optimistic. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” they told The Hollywood Reporter.
