While the group has remained quiet about its next chapter, frontman Eddie Vedder recently revealed that the band has been “woodshedding” — reflecting, writing, and discussing future plans.
Reflecting on Cameron’s Legacy
Guitarist Mike McCready spoke to SPIN about Cameron’s departure, describing him as a “solid force” and a dream collaborator. Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998 after leaving Soundgarden, stepping in just months after Jack Irons resigned. McCready praised Cameron’s musicianship and friendship, noting that his presence elevated the band year after year. “I love Matt and I want him to pursue whatever he wants to pursue and be successful at it,” McCready said.
The Dark Matter Era
Cameron’s final album with Pearl Jam was Dark Matter (2024), produced by Andrew Watt. McCready credited Watt with energizing the band, pushing them to capture raw inspiration quickly. The album’s title track originated from a Cameron drum pattern, which evolved into a full song within days. McCready recalled recording the guitar solo in a single take, calling it “lightning in a bottle.”
What’s Next for Pearl Jam
While no tour dates have been announced, McCready expressed hope that the band could hit the road in 2026. He emphasized that Pearl Jam’s creative process often shifts between slow reflection and bursts of productivity. For now, the band continues to exchange ideas and prepare for its next phase.
McCready’s Side Projects
Outside of Pearl Jam, McCready has been working on his graphic novel and companion album Farewell to Seasons, set for release in October 2026. Inspired by David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era, the project explores Seattle’s music scene through a fictional lens. McCready admitted he often returns to classic influences, diving deep into Bowie’s catalog for creative inspiration.
