Marvel fans are in for a major event this May. Jon Bernthal will headline Punisher: One Last Kill, a Marvel Special Presentation set to premiere on May 12, the same day as the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale. The timing underscores Marvel’s renewed focus on its street-level heroes, bringing Bernthal’s Frank Castle back into the spotlight alongside Charlie Cox’s Daredevil.
Bernthal’s Journey as Frank Castle
Bernthal first appeared as the Punisher in Netflix’s Daredevil Season 2 (2016), where his brutal methods clashed with Cox’s vigilante. His popularity led to a standalone Punisher series that ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. Castle, a military veteran seeking vengeance after his family’s murder, quickly became one of Marvel’s most complex antiheroes.
Return to the MCU
After Netflix’s Marvel shows ended, Cox reprised his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo. Bernthal rejoined him in Daredevil: Born Again (2025), teaming up against Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. The revival marked Marvel’s first M-rated Disney+ series, paving the way for darker, grittier storytelling.
Expanding Punisher’s Role
Following the success of Born Again, Marvel confirmed Bernthal’s return in One Last Kill. The special will deepen Castle’s arc while setting up his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Tom Holland. That film will also feature Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Michael Mando’s Scorpion, signaling a crossover-heavy future for Marvel’s street-level heroes.
What It Means for Marvel Fans
With Daredevil: Born Again renewed through Season 3 and Bernthal’s Punisher stepping back into the MCU, Marvel is clearly investing in its darker, grounded characters. One Last Kill promises to deliver the gritty action fans expect while expanding the Punisher’s role in the larger Marvel universe.
