NBA superstar Stephen Curry is stepping off the hardwood and into the animation booth with his new family sports film “GOAT.” USA TODAY has released the first full trailer for the movie, giving audiences an exclusive look at the high-energy world of roarball—and Curry’s unexpected role as a tall, music-loving giraffe.
The movie hits theaters Feb. 13, offering humor, heart, and a classic underdog journey that Curry says will resonate with viewers of all ages.
An Underdog Story With Big Heart
“GOAT” centers on Will Harris, a small but determined young goat voiced by Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin. Will dreams of becoming a star in the intense animal sport of roarball. His big break arrives when he’s signed by the failing team The Thorns, whose roster is filled with larger, more intimidating players.
Curry, who produces and stars in the film, believes the story mirrors universal experiences.
“Everybody’s felt like an underdog or underrated at some point,” he says. “We’re hoping it’s inspiring and uplifting — something that brings families together.”
Meet the Thorns: A Colorful Cast of Characters
The trailer introduces viewers to the imaginative sport of roarball, set inside vibrant arenas inspired by both classic stadiums and fantasy landscapes. The film boasts a heavyweight voice cast including Gabrielle Union, David Harbour, Patton Oswalt, Jelly Roll, Jennifer Hudson, Nick Kroll, and Nicola Coughlan.
Each animal teammate brings a unique personality to the team:
Archie Everhardt (Harbour) — a gruff rhino
Olivia Burke (Coughlan) — a sharp, quick-thinking ostrich
Modo Olachenko (Kroll) — a fiery Komodo dragon
Jett Fillmore (Union) — Will’s fierce, skeptical idol
Lenny Williamson (Curry) — a lanky giraffe who serves as the team’s comedic spark
Curry’s character, Lenny, is goofy, musical, and easily distracted — a stark contrast to Curry’s focused real-life persona.
“He’s the comic relief in the locker room,” Curry explains. “And over the course of the story, you realize how important the game and his teammates are to him.”
Stephen Curry’s Personal Touch
While Curry admits he’s not much like Lenny personality-wise, he connects with the character’s joyfulness.
“I have fun with everything,” he says. “But when it comes to work, I’m super serious.”
He even joked that Lenny’s personality more closely resembles current Warriors teammate Buddy Hield than himself.
A Movie His Kids May Love Most
Curry shares four children with wife Ayesha Curry, and he’s especially excited to show “GOAT” to two of them—Ryan, 10, and Canon, 7.
“They’re super high-energy, super charismatic,” he says. “They’ll be laughing, singing, dancing — probably the loudest ones in the theater.”
A Family Film With Franchise Potential
With a vibrant world, a star-studded cast, and a heartwarming story about perseverance, “GOAT” has all the ingredients to become a family favorite. Curry hopes the movie inspires viewers the same way sports have inspired him.
“It has something for every generation,” he says. “Everyone can find their best selves in one of the characters.”
