Stranger Things: What Could Happen Next as the Finale Looms

Stranger Things Season 5 sparks backlash over its Netflix visual style.

Netflix’s Stranger Things is preparing to close the book on one of television’s most beloved sci-fi horror sagas. With season five underway and the final four episodes set to drop over the holidays, fans are bracing for an epic conclusion to the battle against Vecna and the creatures of the Upside Down.

Release Dates for the Final Episodes

Three new episodes arrive on Boxing Day in the UK at 01:00 GMT, while US audiences can stream them on Christmas Day at 20:00 EST. The grand finale, a feature-length episode running two hours and five minutes, will debut on New Year’s Day in the UK and December 31 in the US. For those craving a communal experience, the finale will also screen in 500 cinemas across the US and Canada.

Season Five So Far

The opening episodes plunged Hawkins into chaos. Rifts tore open across town, unleashing Demogorgons, while Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) faced relentless pursuit from the military. Hopper (David Harbour) joined her in battling sinister forces inside a military base in the Upside Down, where they encountered Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton. Meanwhile, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) discovered he has supernatural powers, and Max (Sadie Sink) and Holly (Nell Fisher) found themselves trapped in a mysterious cave linked to Vecna’s past.

The Mystery of the Cave

Henry Creel, Vecna’s earlier incarnation, appears terrified of entering the cave where Max and Holly take refuge. Fans speculate this location ties into Henry’s childhood memories and possibly the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Holly’s possession of a cassette tape of Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now adds another layer of intrigue, hinting at deeper connections between memory, music, and Vecna’s curse.

Music as a Weapon

Music continues to play a pivotal role in resisting Vecna’s powers. Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill saved Max in season four, while Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s Dream a Little Dream of Me helped Victor Creel escape his son’s control. Season five introduces Hawkins’ radio station, hosted by Robin (Maya Hawke) and Steve (Joe Keery), which may become a lifeline for the town by broadcasting protective music.

Will and Vecna’s Connection

Noah Schnapp revealed that season five explores parallels between Will and Vecna, likening their dynamic to Harry Potter and Voldemort. This storyline promises to be central to the finale, potentially redefining Will’s role in the fight against the Upside Down.

The End of the Story

Despite the show’s massive success, creators Matt and Ross Duffer insist this is the definitive ending. “The book is closed,” Ross told GamesRadar. While spin-offs like the stage play are in development, the saga of Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Hawkins will conclude with season five.
