Sydney Sweeney’s latest film is fighting an uphill battle. The Euphoria and Anyone But You star’s new boxing drama Christy opened to just $1.3 million across 2,011 theaters, landing among the worst wide-release openings in recent box office history, according to Box Office Mojo.
The inspirational sports film, based on real-life boxer Christy Martin, marks Sweeney’s third theatrical underperformer this year — following Americana and Eden — despite her growing fame and nonstop media buzz.
In Christy, Sweeney portrays Martin, the first woman to headline a pay-per-view boxing event in the 1990s who later became an advocate for domestic violence survivors after surviving a near-fatal attack by her husband and former trainer. While the movie has earned a 66% Rotten Tomatoes score, positive reviews haven’t translated into ticket sales.
The film also marks the first U.S. distribution effort by Black Bear Pictures, the studio behind The Imitation Game and Mudbound. Analysts say a lack of strong studio backing and marketing muscle likely contributed to the weak turnout — especially during a crowded November release window.
Adding to the distraction: Sweeney’s recent American Eagle jeans ad, which went viral for all the wrong reasons. The campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” sparked backlash on TikTok and even drew a bizarre response from political commentators. The actress told GQ that the controversy was “surreal,” saying she mostly ignored it while filming Euphoria Season 3.
Despite the setback, Sweeney’s box office fight isn’t over. She’s set to star in Lionsgate’s thriller The Housemaid this December and has a major role in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada next spring — both expected to reignite her box office momentum.
