Fans eagerly awaiting the film adaptation of The Summer I Turned Pretty will have to wait a little longer. Author and showrunner Jenny Han confirmed on December 2 that the highly anticipated movie is still in early development, despite excitement following the conclusion of the Prime Video series earlier this year.
Speaking at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit, Han shared that while the writing phase is complete, production has not yet begun.
“I just wrote it. We have not filmed anything yet,” Han revealed, confirming that the project is moving forward but is still far from release.
No Holiday Release for the Film
Following the Season 3 finale in September — which marked the end of the TV adaptation — Prime Video announced that the story would continue as a feature film written by Han herself. Many fans speculated about a 2025 holiday release. However, Han clarified that such a timeline isn’t realistic.
Han explained that the third season required extensive production time:
“We had 11 episodes this season and we were filming for most of last year, and then still in post until June… so we wouldn’t have had time to film a whole movie.”
This means filming is not expected to begin until sometime in 2026, pushing the premiere likely to late 2026 or 2027 depending on production schedules.
The Story So Far
The Summer I Turned Pretty premiered in 2022 and quickly built a massive global fanbase. The coming-of-age romantic drama follows Belly Conklin, who spends summers at Cousins Beach and finds herself entangled in a heartfelt love triangle with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher.
Season 3 wrapped the TV storyline, leaving fans eager for the final chapter on the big screen.
Music, Easter Eggs, and Taylor Swift Influence
During the panel discussion, Han also spoke about storytelling details throughout the show, especially emotional Easter eggs and music choices that reflect character arcs.
For example, the relationship between Belly and Conrad featured celestial-themed imagery and music, often tied directly to Taylor Swift songs. Han revealed that she personally wrote a handwritten letter to Swift asking permission to use her music — a request Swift embraced enthusiastically.
Swift later praised the show publicly, saying it had used her songs “in the most thoughtful, beautiful ways.”
What Happens Next?
With the script completed and enthusiasm from fans and cast at an all-time high, focus now shifts to casting confirmations, production scheduling, and filming start dates. As Jenny Han put it:
“I’m here for whatever is next.”
For now, fans can revisit the series on Prime Video while they wait for official movie updates.
