Dave Grohl has revealed fresh details about the Foo Fighters’ highly anticipated twelfth studio album, Your Favorite Toy, set for release on April 12. The band dropped the title track as the lead single, with Grohl describing it as the spark that ignited the entire project.
A New Energy
Grohl explained that the song “Your Favorite Toy” shaped the album’s tone and direction.
“It was the fuse to the powder keg of songs we wound up recording for this record. It feels new,” he said in a press release.
The track emerged after months of experimentation at the band’s 606 studio. Once the song took form, Grohl and his bandmates knew it would define the record’s energy.
Fast-Paced Recording
Speaking with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Grohl recalled how quickly the album came together once the single was recorded.
“This particular song was literally the springboard for the rest of the record. When we hit this, it was like we hit this little vein of gold… and then we just blasted everything out in three or four weeks.”
The album features 10 tracks and was co-produced by the Foo Fighters alongside in-house engineer Oliver Roman.
Honoring Taylor Hawkins
Grohl also reflected on the lasting influence of late drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in 2022. The interview coincided with Hawkins’ birthday, making the moment especially poignant.
“We wake up in the morning and everybody just texts about how much we miss him… In everything we do we want to have that energy for Taylor.”
Ilan Rubin, formerly of Nine Inch Nails, now serves as the band’s drummer following Josh Freese’s departure in 2025.
Looking Ahead
With Your Favorite Toy, the Foo Fighters continue to evolve while honoring their past. Grohl’s reflections suggest the album will deliver both raw energy and heartfelt emotion, making it one of the band’s most anticipated releases in years.
