Michelle Obama is embracing a bold new look. The former first lady revealed on her IMO podcast with her brother Craig Robinson that she recently got 10 new ear piercings — all in one sitting.
A Spontaneous Decision
During the Feb. 11 episode, Robinson teased his sister about her new jewelry, joking that he noticed before her husband, Barack Obama. Michelle laughed, explaining that she had always wanted more piercings but never followed through until now.
“I have always thought about getting some extra piercings in my ear and just never got around to it,” she said. “I was going in for a few, but then I kept telling the piercer, ‘Put one there, and one there.’ Before I knew it, I had 10.”
Barack’s Late Reaction
Michelle shared that Barack didn’t notice right away. “It took him a couple of days,” she said. “He was like, ‘You haven’t had your hair up.’ And I was like, ‘I sleep with you every night, dude.’”
Robinson joked that he spotted the piercings before Barack did, adding to the sibling banter that has become a hallmark of their podcast.
A New Era of Style
Michelle explained that her choice was inspired by younger generations who embrace more creative adornments. “Nowadays, the young people in my life are doing more piercings. You see more of a cluster, a constellation, with twinkles,” she said.
The former first lady has been increasingly open about her evolving style. In November, she told PEOPLE about her new book The Look and discussed how she now feels freer to wear braids — a hairstyle she avoided during her time in the White House.
“Braids represent freedom for me,” she said. “When I’m out of the public eye, I’m swimming, playing tennis, and living life. I wasn’t sure the country was ready for it back then, but now I can wear what I want.”
