Netflix has officially greenlit ‘A Different World’ Sequel, reviving one of television’s most beloved college comedies. The new series, which has been in development for over a year, will debut exclusively on the streaming platform in 2026.

The sequel follows a new generation of Hillman College students, led by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, who stars as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of the original show’s leads Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).

This marks Netflix’s most significant foray into legacy sitcom revivals, continuing the cultural impact of A Different World, which originally aired from 1987 to 1993 as a spin-off of The Cosby Show.

Netflix Confirms ‘A Different World’ Sequel

The ‘A Different World’ Sequel centers on Deborah Wayne as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College, her parents’ alma mater. The story explores how she struggles to forge her own identity while living in the shadow of her famous parents.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix issued a series order following a rare pilot approval earlier this year — an unusual step for the platform.

Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy) serves as the showrunner, bringing a fresh and contemporary perspective to the Hillman legacy. Pride is joined by several alumni of the original NBC series, including Debbie Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Tom Werner, all returning as executive producers.

Allen, who directed most of the original series’ episodes, will also direct the premiere and two additional episodes in the first season.

Quotes and Reactions

Felicia Pride expressed her gratitude for leading the project:

“It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Pride said in a statement. “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”

Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood shared a joint statement, saying:

“A Different World changed everything for us. It was where we got our start as writers and where we found each other. To return to Hillman now and help reimagine this world for a new generation feels like a continuation of that legacy — one rooted in love, purpose, and possibility.”

Cast and Production Overview

In addition to Maleah Joi Moon, the new ensemble cast includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece.

The sequel’s logline reads:

“The series follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater and finds their shadow difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy — while having the time of her life — alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.”

While A Different World originally spun off from The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby is not involved in this sequel.

The return of A Different World marks a key moment for both representation and nostalgia-driven storytelling. The original series broke ground by depicting life at a historically Black college and tackling social issues ranging from race and class to gender and politics.

Industry experts view this revival as Netflix’s strategic move to expand its original comedy slate and connect with multi-generational audiences seeking familiar yet relevant content.

The sequel could also reignite broader interest in HBCU culture, a cornerstone of the original show’s success.

What’s Next

Production on the ‘A Different World’ Sequel is set to begin in early 2026, with a premiere expected later that year. Filming will primarily take place in Atlanta, Georgia, with Hillman College recreated using a blend of modern and classic set design.

Netflix is expected to announce additional casting updates and a teaser trailer by mid-2026. Given the show’s historic fan base, anticipation for the sequel is already building across social media.

The return of Hillman College officially ushers in a new era — one where legacy meets the next generation of storytelling.
