Norway’s Princess Mette-Marit made an unexpected appearance at the Royal Palace in Oslo to welcome King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium during their State Visit. The Crown Princess joined her husband Crown Prince Haakon, along with King Harald and Queen Sonja, despite earlier reports that she would miss the event due to health concerns.
Health Challenges
Mette-Marit has been battling pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease, since 2018. She recently revealed she is preparing for a lung transplant. “I live with a serious illness, and it is what characterizes my everyday life now,” she said in a recent interview. Her presence at the palace was seen as a powerful gesture of resilience and commitment to her royal duties.
Crown Prince Haakon’s Support
Prince Haakon praised his wife’s strength, saying, “On the good days, everything feels easy. But it’s during the difficult times, when you have to weather the storm, that a strong foundation matters most. This is our project; we’re in it together.” His words highlighted the couple’s united front in facing health challenges.
Family Matters
The royal appearance came on the same day Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, lost an appeal to be discharged from prison. He remains incarcerated until his trial verdict in June, adding another layer of difficulty for the Crown Princess and her family.
A Symbol of Dedication
Despite personal struggles, Mette-Marit’s surprise appearance underscored her dedication to the monarchy and her role as Crown Princess. Her presence alongside the Belgian royals was warmly received, marking her first official engagement in nearly two months.
