Ryan Coogler Recalls Chadwick Boseman’s Life-Changing Advice

Ryan Coogler remembers Chadwick Boseman’s advice to “stop saying that” during Black Panther filming

Ryan Coogler is reflecting on the wisdom and support he received from his late friend and collaborator, Chadwick Boseman. The Black Panther director recently opened up about how Boseman’s words continue to shape his life and career.

A Bond Beyond Filmmaking

During an appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Coogler spoke candidly about his relationship with Boseman. He described the actor as a grounding force who helped him navigate the pressures of directing Marvel’s groundbreaking superhero film.

“When I look back at my relationship with him, it taught me so much,” Coogler said. “But the biggest thing is to not take things for granted.”

Learning to Be Present

Coogler admitted that before Boseman’s passing, he often struggled with imposter syndrome and stress. He would view milestones — such as press tours or award campaigns — as overwhelming tasks rather than moments to cherish. Boseman’s advice changed that perspective. “Before losing him, I would not be present in those moments,” Coogler explained. “He would be the one to bring me out of that.”

“Stop Saying That”

The director recalled a pivotal moment during the making of Black Panther. When Coogler expressed fear of being fired, Boseman pulled him aside.

“He actually said, ‘Yo, stop saying that, man. I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I’m not letting nobody fire you, bro. Please stop saying that. Relax, man. Do your work, enjoy it.’”

That reassurance, Coogler shared, helped him push through the pressure and finish the film. It also instilled in him the importance of being present and confident in his work.

Lasting Impact

Now 39, Coogler continues to carry Boseman’s words with him. “I think about that all the time,” he told Poehler. “Even walking in here with you. Just being present — I literally learned that from him.” As Coogler promotes his latest film Sinners, he credits Boseman’s guidance for helping him embrace success without self-doubt. The late actor’s legacy, he emphasized, lives on not only through his performances but also through the lessons he imparted to those closest to him.
