Woman Born Without a Brain Defies All Odds, Turns 20

Updated :  Tuesday, November 11, 2025 2:12 PM

Alex Simpson’s life is nothing short of a miracle. The Omaha, Nebraska native, born with a rare condition called hydranencephaly, just celebrated her 20th birthday — something doctors once said would never happen.

When Alex was born, her parents Shawn and Lorena Simpson were told their daughter would likely not live beyond age 4. “Technically, she has about half the size of my pinky finger of her cerebellum,” Shawn explained to KETV News, describing how little of her brain had formed.

Despite the grim diagnosis, Alex’s story has become one of extraordinary faith, resilience, and unconditional love.

“She’s a Fighter”

Though Alex cannot see or hear, her parents believe she can sense their presence — something they say brings her comfort and connection. “You can see when I talk to her, she’s looking for me,” Shawn said, gently mimicking her eye movements during the interview.

For the Simpsons, love and faith have been their constant guides. “Twenty years ago, we were scared,” Shawn admitted. “But faith — I think that’s what kept us alive.”

Lorena, holding back tears, added simply: “She’s a fighter.”

A Family Bound by Love

Alex’s 14-year-old brother, SJ, says his sister inspires him daily. “When people ask about my family, the first thing I start with is Alex,” he said proudly. “She knows when someone’s upset — even if it’s quiet — she can just feel it.”

Hydranencephaly affects roughly one in 5,000 to 10,000 pregnancies, and most infants born with the condition do not survive their first year, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Yet Alex’s two decades of life stand as a rare and moving testament to strength — and the power of love.

As her family continues to celebrate her life, they say their journey reminds them of one thing above all: miracles do happen.
