Grace Richardson has made history and inspired thousands after being crowned Miss England 2025, becoming the first openly gay winner in the pageant’s history. The 20-year-old musical theatre student from Leicester spoke openly after her victory, calling the moment a powerful triumph over years of bullying and discrimination.
Richardson was crowned during a ceremony in Wolverhampton on Friday and will now represent England at Miss World 2026, where she hopes to become the first British winner since 1964.
A Powerful Victory After Years of Bullying
Richardson revealed that she was bullied “horrendously” at school for her sexuality and appearance. She said she struggled with constant teasing and felt targeted no matter what she did.
“It really affected me mentally. I used to get picked on for countless things — being too skinny, being really short and then becoming really tall. It’s almost like everything I did was wrong.”
Now, she says being crowned Miss England proves resilience wins over cruelty.
“It’s nice being able to stand up now and say, ‘look at what I’ve done.’ I’ve ignored everything negative that they said to me and actually I’ve gone on to achieve my dreams.”
Talent Shines Despite Injury
Richardson secured her place in the finals after winning the talent category. Originally set to perform a ballet routine, she suffered a broken foot just one week after entering the competition.
Instead of withdrawing, she adapted and showcased another strength — her voice. Her rendition of “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman captivated judges and helped secure her national win.
Representation and Courage
Pageant fans and LGBTQ+ supporters online have praised Richardson for her visibility and courage, calling her win a milestone for modern pageantry.
As the first openly gay Miss England, she hopes her journey will empower other young people facing bullying or feeling marginalized.
“I’m proud to represent those who have ever felt different or not good enough. You can overcome anything.”
Looking Ahead to Miss World 2026
With Miss World expected to take place early next year, Richardson is preparing for global competition.
“It would be absolutely incredible to bring Miss World back to England, but you never know how it’s going to go,” she said.
Regardless of the outcome, many fans say she has already made history.
