Guillermo del Toro, one of cinema’s most visionary filmmakers, is set to be honored with the prestigious Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film at the 46th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. The ceremony will take place on February 1, 2026, at The May Fair in London, hosted by critic Mark Kermode.
Honoring a Visionary Director
The London Critics’ Circle confirmed that del Toro will join a distinguished list of past recipients, including Michelle Yeoh, Ken Loach, Kenneth Branagh, Pedro Almodóvar, Kate Winslet, and last year’s honoree Daniel Craig. The award, named after legendary British film critic Dilys Powell, recognizes individuals who have made an indelible mark on global cinema. Jane Crowther, chair of the Critics’ Circle, praised del Toro’s artistry: “We’re delighted to honour such a visionary director for his exemplary world-building and invention, which has provided escape, wonderment and comfort to our membership during his career.”
Del Toro’s Remarkable Career
Since his debut feature Cronos in 1993, del Toro has captivated audiences with imaginative worlds and emotionally rich storytelling. His acclaimed works include The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Mimic, Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and Pinocchio. The Mexican filmmaker has earned three Oscars, three BAFTAs, two Golden Globes, and the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion. His films are celebrated for blending fantasy, horror, and drama with deeply human themes.

Recent Achievements
In 2025, del Toro released a critically acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein on Netflix, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth. The film was praised for its haunting visuals and emotional depth, further cementing his reputation as a master storyteller. Looking ahead, del Toro will also receive the BFI Fellowship in May 2026, the British Film Institute’s highest honor, recognizing his extraordinary contribution to the craft.
Awards Season Spotlight
The London Critics’ Circle Film Awards will also announce winners across all categories during the February ceremony. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another currently leads nominations with a record 16 longlist nods, followed by Hamnet and Sinners.
