RAI Cinema International Distribution has acquired the world rights to Forest High, the debut feature from Belgian director Manon Coubia. The acquisition marks a milestone for the newly established sales arm of Italy’s state broadcaster RAI, as it is the first non‑Italian title in its catalog. The deal comes ahead of the film’s premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in the Perspectives section, which spotlights first works.

About the Film

Set in the northern Alps, Forest High follows three women — Anne, Hélène, and Suzanne — who take turns tending to a hut visited by hikers throughout the seasons. Each woman has chosen solitude in the mountains to confront personal secrets and wounds. The film explores themes of isolation, resilience, and the healing power of nature. The synopsis describes the trio’s retreat as a test of endurance and emotional strength, with their chosen solitude serving as both refuge and challenge. The film’s quiet intensity and alpine setting promise a distinctive cinematic experience.

Manon Coubia’s Debut Feature

Forest High represents Coubia’s first feature film, though she has already earned recognition for her short films. One of her shorts won the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival, establishing her as a filmmaker to watch. With Forest High, she transitions to long‑form storytelling, bringing her poetic sensibility to a broader canvas.

A Belgian–French Co‑Production

The film is produced by Belgium’s The Blue Raincoat in collaboration with France’s Aurora Films. This cross‑border partnership underscores the project’s European identity and artistic ambition. By securing international distribution through RAI, the film is positioned to reach audiences well beyond its home markets.

RAI’s Strategic Move

Fulvio Firrito, head of RAI Cinema International Distribution, expressed pride in supporting Coubia’s debut. “We are very proud to support such a bold and distinctive debut by a talented filmmaker,” Firrito said. “This project represents a further step forward for us, and we are grateful to the Belgian and French producers for entrusting us as their international distributor on such an original and profound project.”

The acquisition signals RAI’s intent to diversify its slate and expand its reach in global markets. Launched at the European Film Market in Berlin last year, the sales arm is quickly building momentum with a mix of Italian and international titles.

Other Titles in the Pipeline

Alongside Forest High, RAI Cinema International will present several new projects at the European Film Market. These include Gabriele Muccino’s Things We Don’t Say and Greta Scarano’s Siblings, which recently won the European Young Audience Award at the European Film Awards. Together, these titles highlight RAI’s growing influence in the international film sales arena.

Looking Ahead

With Forest High set to premiere in Berlin, anticipation is building for Coubia’s debut. The film’s exploration of solitude and secrets in the Alps, combined with RAI’s backing, positions it as one of the standout entries in the Perspectives sidebar. For RAI, the acquisition marks a bold step toward becoming a key player in international film distribution.
