Gene Simmons has reignited controversy with fresh comments dismissing hip-hop’s place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Kiss bassist, 76, doubled down on his long-standing stance during a Feb. 7 episode of the Legends N Leaders podcast, sparking accusations of racism.
Simmons’ Comments
“It’s not my music. I don’t come from the ghetto. It doesn’t speak my language,” Simmons said, adding that hip-hop, opera, and symphony orchestras do not belong in the Hall of Fame. He argued that rap is primarily a spoken-word art form layered over beats, contrasting it with rock’s melodic traditions.
Simmons lamented that bands like Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin remain excluded while hip-hop pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash have been honored. He recalled a past debate with rapper Ice Cube, who defended hip-hop’s inclusion by saying the Hall recognizes artists who embody “the spirit of rock.”
Online Reaction
The remarks quickly drew backlash online. Critics accused Simmons of racism, particularly his use of the word “ghetto.” One user on X wrote, “‘I don’t come from the ghetto’ is the craziest way to say ‘I’m racist.’” Another dismissed him as “an old man yelling at clouds.”
Others were more direct: “The Ghetto Comment is straight up RACISM!” one post read. Another added, “It was racist and he knows it. Ghetto is only used one way in 2026.”
A History of Criticism
Simmons has repeatedly voiced disdain for hip-hop and rap over the years, often drawing criticism for dismissing genres rooted in Black culture. His latest comments have reignited debates about the Hall of Fame’s role in recognizing diverse musical contributions. Despite his objections, Kiss was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, though the band declined to perform at the ceremony due to disputes over which members would play.
The Larger Debate
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over what defines “rock and roll.” While Simmons insists hip-hop lacks the melodic complexity of rock, supporters argue the genre embodies rebellion, innovation, and cultural impact — qualities central to rock’s spirit. Neither Simmons nor the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has responded to requests for comment.
