Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone, whose music defined generations of cinema, will be the subject of a new documentary titled I Never Wrote Music for Films — We All Love Ennio Morricone.
Focus on Concerts and Tours
Unlike previous projects, this film will spotlight Morricone’s extensive concert activity. The perspective comes from his longtime manager Luigi Caiola, who produced more than 250 concerts worldwide between 1997 and 2015. Caiola also oversaw the Grammy-winning tribute album We All Love Ennio Morricone.
Production Details
The documentary is being produced by Milan-based Marie Mariad Cinema, Chinese filmmaker Yi Zhou, and Caiola. Zhou, known for Chronicles of Disney, announced the project through her companies Into the Sun Films and Colors of the Sun Ventures.
Italian musicologist Massimo Privitera will direct, working alongside cinematographer Daniele Ciprì (Vincere). Filming is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 across Italy and Europe.
Structure and Content
The project will be divided into nine chapters, blending fictional sketches, expert commentary, and previously unseen archival footage. Musicians who toured with Morricone for nearly two decades will provide personal accounts of his daily work and humanity.
Colors of the Sun Ventures will handle post-production and distribution rights in selected international territories, in collaboration with Moon Prism Entertainment.
Morricone’s Legacy
Morricone, who died in 2020 at age 91, composed more than 500 film and television scores and over 100 orchestral works. His music for Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, became iconic. Later works such as The Mission and Cinema Paradiso cemented his reputation as one of the greatest composers in film history.
This new documentary follows Giuseppe Tornatore’s acclaimed 2021 film Ennio, but aims to provide a fresh angle by focusing on Morricone’s live performances and the global impact of his concert tours.
