Netflix’s live-action One Piece surprised audiences by staying true to Eiichiro Oda’s beloved pirate fantasy. With Season 2 released on March 10, 2026, fans were eager to see how new characters would be brought to life. Among them, Tony Tony Chopper — the Straw Hat Pirates’ adorable doctor — has become one of the most anticipated additions.
Mikaela Hoover Brings Chopper to Life
Chopper’s facial capture and voice are performed by Mikaela Hoover, an actress known for her quirky and heartfelt roles. Hoover explained her excitement to Tudum: “What excited me about playing Chopper is the tug of war between his standoffishness and his huge heart. He tries so hard to hide his emotions and put on a tough exterior, but underneath, he’s a big softy.”
A James Gunn Favorite
Hoover has long been a trusted collaborator of director James Gunn. She first appeared in his 2008 short Humanzee! and later played Holly in Super (2010). She also appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) as Nova Prime’s assistant and starred in The Belko Experiment (2016), which Gunn wrote and produced.
Her connection to Gunn continued with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), where she voiced Floor the Rabbit, one of Rocket’s tragic friends. She also crossed into DC films, playing Camila in The Suicide Squad (2021) and Cat Grant in Superman (2025).
Beyond Marvel and DC
Hoover’s career extends beyond superhero universes. She has appeared in sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, and 2 Broke Girls. Her TV credits also include Lucifer and J.J. Abrams’ crime thriller Duster. On the film side, she has starred in comedies such as Holidate, Guest House, and Love Hard.
Why Fans Are Excited
Chopper’s introduction marks a major milestone for the live-action One Piece. His blend of humor, heart, and medical expertise makes him a fan favorite in the anime. With Hoover’s performance, Netflix aims to capture both his cuteness and emotional depth, ensuring the Straw Hat Pirates’ newest member resonates with audiences worldwide.
