Nicole Kidman is opening up about her creative ambitions, revealing that she has “circled” the idea of directing but hasn’t yet taken the leap.
Thinking About Directing
In a new interview with Variety, the Oscar-winning actress and producer said she has been tempted to step behind the camera. “I’ve circled it. But then I’ve been too busy or too tired. There are still things I want to do as an actor,” Kidman explained. For now, she says directing remains in her “future folder.”
Kidman emphasized that film is ultimately a director’s medium. “There’ll be a point sometimes when I’m producing and I want to disagree, but the idea of taking something from the director and not having their ultimate vision realized? That’s just not right. I should direct if I want to control that.”
Balancing Career and Family
Kidman, who has two teenage daughters, noted that her priority remains her family. “Right now is not the time for me to do that; I’ve got to take care of these kids,” she said. She also expressed her desire to return to theatre in the U.S. before pursuing directing.
Championing Female Voices
For years, Kidman has made it her mission to work with female writers and directors. She ensured that a woman was hired to helm the upcoming Practical Magic sequel, which will be directed by Susanne Bier. Bier previously collaborated with Kidman on The Undoing and The Perfect Couple, and directed Sandra Bullock in Bird Box.
Kidman explained her purpose: “It’s so good to have found a purpose in terms of that work, being able to shift something culturally at a time where you just go, ‘Well, yeah, I work a lot, and I’m hoping to be able to give female directors and writers far more of a chance through my own showing up and being in the thing.’”
Looking Ahead
While Kidman has not yet committed to directing, her comments suggest it’s a possibility in the future. For now, she continues to balance acting, producing, and her advocacy for female creatives. Fans can look forward to Practical Magic 2, set for release in September, as the latest project shaped by her influence.
