The beloved sci-fi Western Firefly is preparing for liftoff once again — this time as an animated series. Nathan Fillion announced the project at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., confirming that development is already underway with the original cast set to return.
Cast Reunion
Fillion will reprise his role as Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, alongside Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye), Sean Maher (Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam), and Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb). The late Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, will be honored in the continuation.
“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant,” Fillion said. “Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”
Storyline & Setting
The animated series will bridge the gap between the short-lived 2002 series and the 2005 feature film Serenity. Emmy-winning animation studio ShadowMachine has already produced concept art, giving fans a glimpse of the new vision.
Creative Team
Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) and Tara Butters (Marvel’s Agent Carter) will serve as showrunners. Fillion is producing through his Collision33 banner in partnership with 20th Television Animation. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved in the project.
Legacy of Firefly
Despite airing only 11 of its 14 episodes — and out of order — on Fox before cancellation, Firefly developed a cult following. The continuation film Serenity grossed $40 million worldwide and cemented the franchise’s place in sci-fi history.
With the animated revival, fans will finally see new adventures aboard the Serenity, keeping the spirit of the crew alive for a new generation.
