LOS ANGELES — Lisa Kudrow is back on familiar ground as The Comeback returns for its long-awaited third season, premiering Sunday at 10:30 p.m. EDT on HBO. The series once again places Kudrow’s character, Valerie Cherish, in the spotlight — this time navigating Hollywood’s latest existential threat: AI-written television.
A Return to Stage 24
Season 3 takes Valerie to Warner Bros. Stage 24, the same soundstage where Kudrow filmed Friends from 1994 to 2004. Kudrow admitted it was impossible not to reference her iconic past. “We were shooting on the Friends stage. Couldn’t help it,” she said at a Los Angeles press conference.
The show cleverly plays with nostalgia. Valerie overlooks the plaque listing Friends and other hit shows filmed on Stage 24, insisting her sitcom will be the first success there. Co-creator Michael Patrick King teased audiences by nearly letting Valerie say “Friends” outright before cutting her off mid-word.
Family Ties and Legacy
Adding to the meta layers, Kudrow’s son Julian Stern joins the cast later in the season. Stern was born during Friends’ fourth season, and Kudrow recalled a photo of him as a toddler on the same stage. “There he is, back and acting and part of this finale,” she said.
AI as the New Disruption
The new season tackles artificial intelligence as a looming disruptor in Hollywood. Kudrow compared it to the rise of reality TV, which inspired the show’s first season in 2005. “Just as reality TV was sort of the almost extinction event for scripted television, it’s the same feeling about AI,” she explained.
King added urgency: “Our goal was to get on the air before a studio admitted they were using AI.” While Kudrow believes AI-written series are still “in the what if phase,” King suggested the industry may be closer than many realize.
Honoring Mickey
Season 3 also addresses the loss of Robert Michael Morris, who played Valerie’s confidante Mickey. Morris passed away in 2017, and the show pays tribute by having Valerie spread Mickey’s ashes. Kudrow designed the memorial box herself, a gesture King said captured her deep connection to the character.
The End of the Comeback
With nearly a decade between each season, Kudrow and King confirmed Season 3 will serve as the series finale. “It’s a trilogy,” Kudrow said firmly. King added, “We’re not doing a quadrilogy. It took us 11 years for the key to show up, so come on.”
As Valerie Cherish faces AI, nostalgia, and personal loss, The Comeback Season 3 closes the curtain on one of television’s most meta comedies — with Kudrow once again proving her knack for blending humor, heart, and Hollywood satire.
