The rise of AI-generated performers took a bold step this week as Tilly Norwood, an AI-created character, made her debut in a music video titled Take the Lead. The entire project was produced using AI tools, with Norwood singing about the controversy surrounding her existence and insisting she’s “not a puppet.”
Lyrics Address the Backlash
In the video, Norwood sings: “When they talk about me, they don’t see / The human spark, the creativity.” The chorus takes a provocative turn, urging other actors to embrace AI technology: “Actors, it’s time to take the lead / Create the future, plant the seed.”
The song was generated using Suno, while the video was created by Particle6 with multiple AI platforms.
Human Collaboration Behind the Scenes
Despite Norwood’s digital nature, a disclaimer before the video notes that 18 real humans contributed to the production — from costume designers to editors. Still, critics pointed out the familiar “tinny” sound of AI-generated music and the easily recognizable AI visuals.
The Creator’s Vision
Norwood was developed by Eline van der Velden, CEO of Particle6 and AI talent studio Xicoia. Van der Velden has long promised to introduce Norwood as an AI actress in film and television. While some speculated that talent agencies might sign her, major agencies publicly rejected the idea.
In December, Van der Velden addressed concerns about AI replacing human performers. “I underestimated the effect that Tilly would have on the world,” she said. “As an artist, I was trying to show the world where the tech is at.”
A Controversial Future
Norwood’s debut highlights the growing debate over AI in entertainment. While some see potential for innovation, others worry about the impact on human actors and the authenticity of art. For now, Norwood’s music video has sparked conversation about where the industry is headed — and whether audiences are ready to embrace AI performers.
