Al Roker, the beloved weather anchor of NBC’s Today show, is celebrating three decades on the morning program with no plans to step away anytime soon. At 71, Roker remains a fixture of American television, bringing warmth, humor, and resilience to viewers each day.
A Milestone Celebration
On Tuesday, Today honored Roker’s “Al-iversary” with tributes, special guests, and highlights from his 30-year career. The celebration underscored his impact on the show since joining in 1996, when he replaced longtime broadcaster Willard Scott. In an interview with People magazine, Roker reflected on his journey and future. “I haven’t thought about retirement,” he said, joking that NBC executives might feel differently. “I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it. At some point, I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon.”
Gratitude for the Team
Roker praised the Today team, past and present, for shaping the show’s legacy. “To be part of a pretty cool club is very special,” he said. “To say that this was a dream job isn’t really accurate because it never dawned on me that I could be on the Today show.” He also shared what he hopes his legacy will be when he eventually steps down: “People, when they watch, that they didn’t feel like I wasted their time. And that hopefully they felt better after watching than before.”
Overcoming Health Challenges
Roker’s career has been marked not only by professional success but also by personal resilience. In 2022, he was hospitalized with blood clots in his legs and lungs, forcing him to miss the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in 27 years. A month later, he faced internal bleeding caused by ulcers, requiring emergency surgery to remove part of his colon and his gallbladder. He returned to Today in 2023, candidly sharing his health journey with viewers. “I lost half my blood,” he explained. “My doctor said if I had not been in the shape I had been, I would most likely not be here today.”
Looking Ahead
Despite these challenges, Roker remains committed to his role. His enthusiasm and dedication continue to inspire colleagues and fans alike. As he celebrates 30 years on Today, Roker shows no signs of slowing down, proving that passion and perseverance can keep a career thriving well into its fourth decade.
