The new docuseries Dynasty: The Murdochs dives deep into Rupert Murdoch’s empire and the bitter family battles over succession. From health scares to explosive depositions, the series reveals the drama behind one of the world’s most powerful media dynasties.
1. The Succession Episode That Made the Family Panic
The Murdochs reportedly “panicked” after watching the Succession episode where patriarch Logan Roy dies suddenly. The HBO drama, inspired by the Murdochs, hit too close to home — especially since Rupert had no clear succession plan when he suffered a serious back injury in 2018. His children rushed to his bedside, fearing the dynasty might collapse.
2. Rupert Sided with Roger Ailes Over His Sons
The series highlights Rupert’s tendency to pit his children against each other. At Fox News, Lachlan and James clashed with chairman Roger Ailes. In multiple disputes, Rupert sided with Ailes, undermining his sons. Ailes even mocked them as “Tweedle Dumb” and “Tweedle Dumber.” The brothers eventually forced Ailes out in 2016 after sexual harassment allegations.
3. A Brutal Deposition Between Father and Son
In 2024, Rupert attempted to change the family trust to give Lachlan full control. During depositions, James faced harsh personal questions — allegedly scripted by Rupert himself. Questions like “Have you ever accomplished anything on your own?” left James shaken, highlighting the deep estrangement between father and son.
4. Elisabeth Murdoch Overlooked as a Successor
Despite Elisabeth’s success outside the family business, Rupert allegedly never considered her a viable successor. James reportedly called his father a “misogynist,” claiming Rupert dismissed Elisabeth purely because of gender.
5. The Final Settlement
After a year-long legal battle, the Murdoch trust was settled. Lachlan emerged as Rupert’s successor, while Prudence, Elisabeth, and James received $1.1 billion each for their shares. The trust now includes Lachlan and Rupert’s younger daughters, Grace and Chloe, and will remain active until 2050.
