Acclaimed playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris — known globally for his Tony-nominated hit “Slave Play” — has been arrested in Japan after customs officials alleged they discovered MDMA (Ecstasy) in his bag during an airport inspection. The incident reportedly occurred on Nov. 16 at Naha Airport in Okinawa, according to The New York Times.

Authorities say Harris was detained after arriving from Taiwan, when routine customs screening of his carry-on bag allegedly revealed approximately 780 milligrams of MDMA. He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempting to smuggle a narcotic substance into the country, a serious criminal offense under Japan’s Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Officials confirmed that Harris has remained in custody since his arrest. On Dec. 4, he was formally referred to prosecutors in Naha, initiating official charging procedures. Police declined to comment on whether Harris has admitted to the allegations. A representative for the playwright did not return requests for comment.

Japan’s Strict Drug Laws

Japan maintains some of the toughest anti-drug regulations in the world. Even small quantities of illegal drugs can lead to long prison sentences, heavy fines, and deportation. If convicted, Harris could face up to seven years in prison.

The country has seen similar high-profile cases before. In 1980, Paul McCartney was arrested in Tokyo after airport customs allegedly found marijuana in his luggage. He spent nine days in detention before being released and deported.

Harris’ Career and Influence

Jeremy O. Harris rose to prominence with his provocative 2018 drama “Slave Play”, which became the most Tony-nominated play in Broadway history at the time, earning 12 nominations. He later co-wrote the 2021 film “Zola”, contributed to “Euphoria” Season 2, and expanded his acting career with appearances in Gossip Girl, Emily in Paris, and the film The Sweet East.

He is also set to appear alongside Charli XCX in the upcoming film “Erupcja” directed by Pete Ohs.

The arrest has drawn widespread international attention, particularly within the entertainment, theater, and LGBTQ+ communities who view Harris as a groundbreaking artistic voice.

As of now, there is no public timeline for a trial, release, or potential diplomatic involvement.
