Jill Martin, a longtime lifestyle contributor on NBC’s Today, has revealed she will undergo emergency surgery following complications related to her breast cancer treatment. The 49-year-old shared the update on Friday, Jan. 9, offering a candid look at the ongoing realities of recovery after cancer.
A New Health Setback — But Not a Recurrence
Martin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, emphasized that the upcoming surgery is not due to a cancer recurrence. Instead, it is a preventative reconstructive procedure meant to stop a potentially serious complication before it escalates.
“Just when you think the fight is over, life reminds you that healing isn’t always linear,” Martin shared. She added that the surgery is “preventative and proactive,” explaining that without timely intervention, the issue could lead to infection or a medical emergency.
“It’s important to say this clearly: my cancer is not back,” Martin said.
Why Emergency Surgery Is Needed
Following her diagnosis, Martin underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Her doctors have now identified a risk that the surgical wound could reopen, prompting immediate action to prevent further complications. She is expected to remain hospitalized for at least three nights after the procedure, followed by several weeks of recovery at home. This surgery will mark her eighth medical procedure in just two years, underscoring the long and often unpredictable road many cancer survivors face.
‘Worn Out and Grateful’
Martin spoke openly about the emotional toll of continued medical care, even after cancer treatment ends.
“I feel worn out and grateful all at once,” she said. “Sometimes, it feels like it never really ends. And still — I’m grateful.”
She credited early intervention, skilled doctors, and vigilance for helping her stay on track. Her message highlights a lesser-discussed part of survivorship: healing doesn’t always follow a straight line once treatment concludes.
Her Breast Cancer Journey
Martin first revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in July 2023 during an emotional interview on Today, speaking with co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb. She shared that breast cancer runs in her family. Her grandmother died from the disease, and her mother previously underwent a double mastectomy after her own diagnosis. Although Martin’s mammogram earlier that year was clear, genetic testing revealed she carried the BRCA mutation. That discovery led her to pursue preventative surgery — and scans ahead of that procedure unexpectedly uncovered cancer.
“That test saved my life,” Martin said at the time.
Advocating for Awareness and Early Action
Throughout her journey, Martin has consistently used her platform to stress the importance of genetic testing, early detection, and proactive care. Her latest update continues that message, showing that follow-up care and vigilance remain essential even after successful cancer treatment.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, Martin remains focused on recovery and moving forward. She expressed gratitude for the chance to act early and avoid more serious complications. Today airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on NBC, where Martin continues to be a familiar and trusted voice for viewers. Her story serves as a reminder that survivorship is not an endpoint, but an ongoing process — one that often requires strength, patience, and continued care.
