Lord of the Flies and House of the Spirits TV series premiere at Berlinale

Two major literary adaptations are heading to Berlin, as the Berlinale TV lineup adds high-profile new series based on Lord of the Flies and The House of the Spirits. The upcoming television adaptations will premiere at the Berlinale TV series sidebar, bringing two globally recognized stories to one of Europe’s most influential film and series showcases. The selection highlights the growing impact of prestige television at major festivals, where new series now debut alongside feature films.

The new version of Lord of the Flies, adapted by Jack Thorne, will receive a European premiere. Meanwhile, Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits series will make its world premiere in the German capital in the coming weeks.

Two iconic stories get Berlinale premieres

Lord of the Flies remains one of the most widely discussed novels of the 20th century. The classic story by William Golding follows a group of children who become stranded on an island and attempt to build a functioning society. Over time, their fragile sense of order breaks down, and their efforts to remain civil spiral into conflict and power struggles. The new TV adaptation is set to launch later this year on the BBC in the U.K. and on Stan in Australia, making the Berlinale premiere an important moment for the series before it reaches wider audiences.

On the other side, The House of the Spirits brings Isabel Allende’s sweeping multi-generational storytelling to television. The series follows three generations of the Trueba women through a remote, conservative South American nation shaped by political change, family loyalty, and resilience. Allende’s novel has long been a favorite among readers worldwide, and it was previously adapted into a 1993 film directed by Bille August. The new series version is set for Prime Video and is now positioned as one of the Berlinale TV program’s key highlights.

Berlinale TV lineup expands with European and international titles

Along with the two book adaptations, Berlinale TV will also feature several other series selected for the sidebar. Germany’s House of Yang has been added to the program, strengthening the local presence in Berlin’s international lineup. HBO Max Spain’s Ravalear will also screen as part of the selection, expanding the festival’s focus on European storytelling with a modern urban setting.

Ravalear is set in Barcelona’s Raval neighborhood and follows a family-run restaurant facing eviction after an investment fund buys their building. The premise taps into current issues around housing pressure, gentrification, and survival in changing cities, themes that have been increasingly reflected in modern European drama.

The Berlinale TV selection also includes Heysel 85, a series centered on the stadium disaster, adding historical and investigative storytelling to the lineup. Another BBC series, Mint, also joins the program, and is connected to filmmaker Charlotte Regan, who directed Scrapper. Together, the lineup suggests Berlinale TV is aiming for a balanced mix of literary prestige, contemporary drama, and socially rooted storytelling that speaks to both local audiences and international buyers.

Berlinale continues blending films and high-end series

The Berlinale has steadily expanded its TV presence, reflecting how major festivals are adjusting to the dominance of streaming platforms and global series launches. This year’s announcements also included additions on the film side, with projects such as Charli XCX’s The Moment joining the Berlinale lineup. Sunny Dancer, starring Bella Ramsey and Neil Patrick Harris, was also listed among the new additions. With Lord of the Flies and The House of the Spirits taking center stage in Berlinale TV, Berlin is set to become a major launchpad for some of the most anticipated book-to-screen adaptations of the year.
