Meryl Streep’s Surprise Cameos in Pixar’s Hoppers and Sci-Fi Epic Project Hail Mary

March 2026 has delivered two of the year’s biggest hits — Pixar’s animated comedy Hoppers and Amazon MGM’s space adventure Project Hail Mary. While the films couldn’t be more different in tone, they share one delightful surprise: both feature voice cameos by Hollywood icon Meryl Streep. Streep, the most Oscar-nominated actress in history, lent her voice to both productions in playful, unexpected roles that had audiences buzzing.

Streep as the Insect Queen in Hoppers

In Pixar’s Hoppers, Streep voices the regal monarch butterfly known as the Insect Queen. Her character proposes “squishing” Mayor Jerry, voiced by Jon Hamm, setting up what seems like a major villain arc. But in a twist, the Queen is accidentally squished by Mabel (Piper Curda), leaving Dave Franco’s caterpillar Titus to rise as the new Insect King.

Casting Streep in a role that ends so abruptly only heightened the absurd humor. Director Daniel Chong revealed he had envisioned a “Meryl Streep type” from the start. When pitching the role over Zoom, Streep laughed throughout and embraced the comedic tone, even joking: “I am ready for all that.”

A Meta Cameo in Project Hail Mary

Meanwhile, in Project Hail Mary, Streep’s cameo arrives during a montage where astronaut Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) experiments with voices for translating Rocky’s alien language. Grace praises Streep’s versatility before moving on to other options. The gag underscores her reputation as an actress who can do anything, while ultimately settling on James Ortiz’s voice for Rocky.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller secured Streep’s participation through producer Amy Pascal, who had worked with her before. Lord described the moment as “magical,” noting Streep delivered multiple playful takes that kept Gosling guessing who would speak next.

First Big-Screen Roles in Seven Years

These cameos mark Streep’s first theatrical releases since Greta Gerwig’s Little Women in 2019, where she played Aunt March. In the years since, she appeared in streaming projects like Let Them All Talk, The Prom, and Don’t Look Up, and made guest appearances on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Her return to cinemas doesn’t end here. Streep will reprise her Golden Globe-winning role as Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada 2, hitting theaters May 1. She is also attached to star as Joni Mitchell in a biopic directed by Cameron Crowe.

A Playful Return to the Spotlight

For fans, Streep’s willingness to poke fun at herself in Hoppers and Project Hail Mary is a reminder of her range and humor. These brief but memorable performances signal not just a return to theaters, but a renewed energy as she balances comedy, drama, and iconic roles. With two cameos already making headlines, anticipation for her upcoming projects is higher than ever.
