Former Instructor Recalls Early Struggles of Nick Reiner: “Beyond Any of Us”

A former yoga instructor who worked with the Reiner family during Nick Reiner’s childhood is speaking out about early behavioral challenges she observed, years before the tragic deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner. In comments shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Zabel described Nick as a child whose emotional struggles were increasingly difficult to manage, despite persistent support from his parents.

Early signs of ongoing challenges

Zabel recalled that Nick displayed intense energy and difficulty regulating emotions during childhood group sessions. Attempts to help him participate calmly met with mixed results.

“It was a perfect storm,” she said, calling his behavior complex and resistant to easy intervention. “As hard as they tried to manage it, get help, address it, it’s just beyond any of us to be able to diffuse.”

According to Zabel, Rob and Michele took proactive steps rather than withdrawing. When group lessons proved inadequate, they arranged private instruction for Nick to develop emotional grounding and self-regulation tools.

Private efforts and limited progress

“They asked me to teach Nicky privately, which I started to do, to help him to calm down and channel his energy,” Zabel said.

She remembered moments of progress during one-on-one sessions, yet added that the deeper underlying issues continued. “Nick’s issues as a child were beyond any of us,” she said, emphasizing the family’s consistent and adaptive efforts. Zabel described Rob and Michele as deeply engaged parents who continually explored solutions. “They were incredibly passionate, all-in parents doing their best,” she said. She highlighted Michele in particular as a dedicated caregiver who “lived for those kids.”

A tragedy years in the making

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14. Days later, their son Nick, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths. He has not yet entered a plea. Court records show his arraignment continues Jan. 7.

Family members including siblings Jake and Romy released a statement calling the loss “horrific and devastating” and described pain “every moment of the day.” Zabel said the news shocked her. “They tried everything,” she said. “Some things are simply beyond what any parent can control.”

Complex family challenges raise broader questions

Mental health advocates note that untreated emotional or behavioral disorders in childhood can intensify in adulthood if not addressed through comprehensive, long-term treatment. Families seeking support for children with chronic challenges often face limited resources, uncertainty and emotional strain. Experts say the tragedy underscores the need for early intervention and sustained support systems for families managing serious behavioral or psychological conditions.

As the investigation continues, the case raises painful questions about support gaps and what more could be done to help families facing similar struggles. The Reiners’ private efforts, as recalled by Zabel, reflect a long-running attempt to protect their child and maintain hope in the face of increasingly unpredictable circumstances.
