LOS ANGELES — The Buffy the Vampire Slayer community is mourning the loss of Nicholas Brendon, who passed away at 54. Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris, was remembered by co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar with a heartfelt message quoting one of his character’s most memorable lines.
Gellar’s Tribute
On Instagram, Gellar shared a photo of herself with Brendon and reflected on his legacy by quoting Xander’s words from Season 7:
“They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen… But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me.”
She added her own message: “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Remembering Xander Harris
Brendon starred in Buffy from 1997 to 2003, appearing in all seven seasons. As Xander, he was one of the few characters without supernatural powers, yet he played a crucial role in helping Buffy save the world. His humor, loyalty, and humanity made him a fan favorite and an essential part of the “Scooby gang.”
Family Statement
Brendon’s family confirmed his passing in a statement:
“He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor, and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. He loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”
They described him as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” noting that he remained optimistic about the future despite past struggles.

Beyond acting, Brendon embraced painting and art, sharing his work with loved ones. His family emphasized that his art was “one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
Brendon’s death comes just a year after the passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, making the loss especially difficult for the Buffy cast and fans.
