Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have donated $25,000 to the GoFundMe campaign supporting the family of late Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek.
A Community Effort
The fundraiser, organized by friends of the Van Der Beek family, has surpassed its $2 million target. The campaign was launched after medical costs left the family financially strained following Van Der Beek’s battle with colorectal cancer. Spielberg’s donation carries symbolic weight, as Van Der Beek’s character Dawson Leery was famously portrayed as a devoted fan of the filmmaker. Posters of Spielberg’s films, including E.T. and Schindler’s List, decorated Dawson’s bedroom throughout the series.
Other Celebrity Contributions
Spielberg was not the only Hollywood figure to contribute. Actress Zoe Saldaña-Perego pledged $2,500 monthly, while director Jon M. Chu donated $10,000. Their generosity reflects the widespread support for Kimberly Van Der Beek and the couple’s six children during this difficult time.
Family’s Statement
A statement from the organizers expressed gratitude: “Your kindness has meant more than we can put into words. In the middle of deep grief, your support has been a light. It reminds us that love is real, that community is strong, and that James’s spirit continues to bring people together.”
Remembering James Van Der Beek
Van Der Beek, who died at 48, was best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003). He revealed in November 2024 that he had been privately battling cancer since August 2023.
While he and Spielberg never collaborated professionally, the director surprised fans at last year’s Dawson’s Creek reunion by sending a video message to the cast. “Dawson, you made it,” Spielberg said. “Maybe someday, I will get to have a Dawson’s closet.”
A Legacy of Connection
The donations and tributes highlight Van Der Beek’s lasting impact on fans and colleagues alike. His portrayal of Dawson Leery captured the spirit of youthful passion for storytelling, and his admiration for Spielberg created a cultural link that now resonates even more deeply. As Kimberly and the children mourn, the outpouring of support from Hollywood and beyond underscores the strength of community in times of loss.
